John 20:31 tells us that John recorded only some miraculous signs of Jesus so that they are evidence that “Jesus is the Son of God and by believing those you may have life in his name”. What was so special about the miracles John chose to put in his gospel account? Would telling more make it more impactful? John focuses on who Jesus is and not what He did.
Miracle one: Jesus turns water into exceptional wine at the wedding in Cana exceeding the expectations of the steward and the guests. (John 2) He is a transformer who transforms the ordinary into extraordinary. He changes us, our circumstances, our provision, our vision and blessings from ordinary into extraordinary.
Miracle two: Jesus heals the official’s son. (John 4:43-54) When we take him at his word, He moves on behalf of our loved ones. He is the answer to our prayers.
Miracle three: Jesus heals the man at the pool of Bethesda. (John 5:5-15) Jesus not only removes the infirmity but also addresses the sin that is at the root of the infirmity. “Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.” He is the Redeemer.
Miracle four: Jesus feeds the five thousand. (John 6) He is the provider of our basic needs.
Miracle five: Jesus walks on water in the storm. (John 6:16) He is Lord over our circumstances when we receive him into our life.
Miracle six: Jesus heals a man born blind. (John 9) Jesus can provide something you missed at birth thus restoring the glory God intended for you. He always wants to show God’s glory. He is the restorer of glory.
Miracle seven: Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead. (John 11) Death is no obstacle for Jesus. Notice Jesus had others partner with him in this miracle. He asked them to take away the stone, then commanded them to remove the grave cloths from Lazarus. He is the Resurrection.
Miracle eight: Jesus rose from the dead and appeared to the disciples as a resurrected human and not a ghost. His existence is supernatural. Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.
By believing these miracles I have life in his name.
- He transforms my ordinary life into an extraordinary one.
- He answers my prayers for my loved ones and myself.
- He heals my body and forgives my sin.
- He provides my basic needs.
- He is Lord over my circumstances.
- He restores to me what I missed at birth.
- He raises dead things in me back to life.
- He walks with me supernaturally.
