Luke 22:14
“I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. For I tell, you I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.” (emphasis mine)
We know Jesus celebrated the Passover since childhood (Luke 2:41-49) so why was this one special? All previous Passover feasts were prophecies of what God was going to do. This one was “the real thing.” Up to now, the Passover Lamb was a promise from God. When the lamb was prepared, the blood was poured from it (kosher). At the first Passover in Egypt, that blood was smeared on the door posts so the death angel would “pass over” that house. When Jesus said “This is my body”, the Passover Lamb himself was speaking. The cup that Jesus offers is His own blood poured out to remove sin so that death as the consequence of sin will “pass over” us.
Jesus also said He would not eat the bread and drink the wine again until the Kingdom of God was fulfilled. Four days later after He walked on the road to Emmaus with two disciples, He ate the bread and the wine which was a sign that the Kingdom of God was fulfilled. Only then did the disciples recognize him. (Lk 24:30)
The Kingdom of God is fulfilled in us with the body and blood of Jesus that gives life and forgives sin when we receive the Passover bread and wine today in the communion.
