Prayer For the Government

This prayer was written for the National Day of Prayer at my church. It is fitting for any day praying for our government.

Prayer for the Government of the USA

I Tim 2:12 First of all, I admonish and urge that petitions, prayers intercessions, and thanksgivings be offered on behalf of all men for kings and all who are in positions of authority or high responsibility…

Lord, we now choose to stand in the gap on behalf of the citizens of the USA, at home or abroad, lifting our prayers and intercessions for those of our government–for President Obama, vice President Biden, the Cabinet, the Congress, the Senate, the Supreme Court, for military leaders, for those responsible for security, for our state governors, law making bodies, mayors and cities across this nation. We now pray on their behalf the prayer that Solomon prayed in I Ki3:9

Now, O Lord our God, you have made them servants as kings but they are only humble children and do not know how to carry out their duties. They are here among the people you have chosen, a great people numerous in number.

So give your servants discerning hearts to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong so that they will be able to govern this great people of yours.

Because we are asking for discernment in administering justice, you will give them wise and discerning hearts beyond human understanding. We declare that they will walk in your ways and obey your statues and commands as David did, and you will give them long life.

May all the world hear of the decisions which the wise leaders make, and they stand in awe of them as they will see the wisdom of God that is in them to do justice. Say Amen.

Prov 11:3 Integrity of the upright shall guide them, but the willful contrariness and crookedness of the treacherous shall destroy them.

Daniel 9:4

O Lord, the great and awesome god, who keeps his covenant of love with all who love him and obey his commands, we have sinned and done wrong. We have been wicked and have rebelled; we have turned away from your commands and laws. We have not listened to your servants the prophets, who spoke in your name to our kings, our princes and our fathers, and to all the people of the land. We have transgressed your law and turned away, refusing to obey you. Therefore, the judgments you have written have been poured out on us. Violence and disaster are in the land. For you Lord are righteous in everything you do. We do not make requests of you because we are righteous, but because of your mercy. O Lord, listen! O Lord forgive! O Lord, hear and act ! For your sake. Do not delay because your land and your people bear your name.

Exodus 18: 19-21 (Jethro to Moses)

You must be the people’s representative before God:

Teach them the decrees and laws, and show them the way to live and the duties they are to perform. Then you shall chose able men from all the people—men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain—and appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens. Have them sere as judges for the people at all times. They will share the load with you. You will be able to stand the strain, and these people will go home satisfied.

Lord we repent of not teaching your decrees and putting men and women of integrity in public office. We have made them rulers of many without your laws and decrees. We repent of not participating in election campaigns, not praying for just rulers, for criticizing and judging those who serve us. We repent for allowing the press to judge them. Forgive us Lord. Say Amen.

We now declare that the laws and decrees of the Lord shall go out from our mouths for people of integrity to be taught and raised up to shoulder the awesome responsibility of government. As they serve us in office, we shall serve them with prayer and prophetic encouragement. Your Word says that the “government shall be upon your shoulders.” Now in the spirit, we remove the government of this great nation from the shoulders of the worldly desires that would carry it away from God. We, by agreement, place the government of this land on the shoulders of the Lord Jesus Christ. For He is the Wonderful counselor, the Almighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace. Say Amen
